Course Description: United States History I incorporates college preparatory Advanced (CPA) and College Preparatory (CP) level students in each class. The course covers the history of the United States from Colonization to the turn of the 20th Century. Special emphasis will be placed on the Founding. Students will make connections between the present day and historical events and trends. Students taking this course will be expected to increase their understanding of fundamental civic concepts, knowledge of geography, and skills in reading and analyzing primary sources, graphs and cartoons. In addition, students will acquire a broad knowledge of current events, specialized social studies vocabulary and economic concepts. All students will be required to write a formal research paper analyzing a single topic in United States History 1754-1900.
Academic Expectations from the Mission Statement: • Select educational pathways consistent with interests, abilities, and goals. • Assume responsibility for academic achievement. • Acquire, interpret, analyze, integrate and apply information in a discerning manner. • Demonstrate ability to use technology appropriate to subject areas. • Exhibit ability to read, write, communicate, and compute.
Reading of the text, primary source material and news sources is required. Students will also be provided opportunities to engage in many of the following activities: simulations, plays, skits, research papers and research posters, oral and written reports, debates, and class discussions. Active class participation is essential to success in this class.
Primary Textbook: American Anthem
Supplemental reading/sources: Speeches, poems, documents, Primary sources
Notebook - Students will need a 3-ring binder for the semester. I would suggest at least a 2-inch binder. This binder will serve as their notebook and assignments will be kept in this notebook such as opening activities and handouts. These notebooks will be checked and graded periodically.

Homework and in class assignments completed on time
Tests and Quizzes: Students will be given at least two days notice for all tests. Tests will be of varying point values. Quizzes will be both announced and unannounced. If a student is absent on the day of a test or quiz, arrangements must be made within one week of the original test date to make it up.
Cheating in any form will not be tolerated. You will receive a 0 for the assignment and a call will be issued home.
Grading Policy: Based on 100 points

- Raise your hand to ask/answer a question.
- We will be doing several assignments in class that require cooperative group work. All students are expected to act appropriately and stay on task.
- If you should receive a teacher detention, they are the same length as an office detention and will be served on Tuesday.
- Rubrics will be provided for most assignments, and students should use them to complete their work successfully.
Course Requirements:

- Research paper and project will be completed on time. Long term illness is considered an extenuating circumstance. Notify teacher of this situation as soon as possible. The research paper and project must be handed in the day they are due or you will receive a 0. The research paper and project account for 10% of your final grade. A rubric will be provided.
- Make-up work: Homework and homework quizzes should be completed within a day or two of absence, dependent upon length of absence; test make-ups should be completed within ten school days (unless extenuating circumstances). My late day is Tuesday, but other arrangements may be made. Students are responsible for all work missed due to absence.
- Students are expected to follow all school rules laid out in the Student & Parent/Guardian Handbook in the classroom at all times
- All cell phones, headphones, ipods, etc. must be put away upon entering the classroom
- Students must have their books covered at all times as they are responsible for them and their condition.
- Students are expected to treat classroom materials with care and put them back in their place after they are done using them
- Remain on task until instructed to clean up.
